Aimhigher logoFAQs Frequently Asked Questions

What date is the UWE Summer School?

The UWE Summer School will run from the 22nd – 25th June 2009.

How much will the Summer School cost me?

Nothing, the Summer School is absolutely free.  All of your food, drink, transport, activities and accommodation is paid for although you may want to take money for snacks or a souvenir.

What if I have some kind of disability, special educational need or medical condition?

The Summer School welcomes applications from students who may have special educational needs or a disability, whose teachers believe they could go on to higher education (HE).

The residential Summer School Programme is committed to supporting all students whatever their needs and disabilities and to include everyone who might want to attend. The university has facilities and specialised staff to help everyone irrespective of their individual needs. They will make sure you get any support you need so that you can make the most of the Summer School. This means that your accommodation will be appropriate, taught sessions will take your circumstances into account and the social programme will be accessible and enjoyable for all.

The application form asks for information on any special educational needs, disabilities or medical conditions so that the Summer School Team can make sure that suitable accommodation, teaching, learning and trips are there for you.  Please feel free to discuss any issues or concerns that you have with the Summer School Team.

Where will I be sleeping and will I have to share a room?

You will be given your own en-suite room in the new student flats on the Frenchay campus.  You will share the flat with five other students of the same gender from different schools or colleges and a fantastic Student Ambassador (also of the same gender).

Can I leave if I don’t like it?

Yes, of course.  We don’t want anyone to be unhappy but we would ask that you give the Summer School a chance.  There will be a lot of people you can talk to if you have a problem and if we can, we will try to resolve the problem as quickly as possible so that you can have a great time.

I’m really interested.  What should I do now?

Firstly, you need to make sure you that you are available to attend the Summer School if you are offered a place and that it is right for you. Your teacher will have given you the Summer School pack because they believe you are eligible.  However, if you are unsure about your eligibility please check with your teacher or with the UWE Summer School Team.

To apply you should complete part 1 of the application form and then pass the form on to your parent/carer to complete section 2. Please then return the form to your teacher ASAP.  All forms must come via schools or colleges not directly from a student.

The Summer School is a four day event which includes three nights in university accommodation; therefore if you are interested please make sure that all your usual commitments such as work and social commitments are re-arranged for this period.

Please be aware that applying does not automatically guarantee you a place. The selection process will be based on your personal statement followed by the date the application is received by UWE.
