You’ve exploring this website because you have been given a booklet by your teacher because he/she thinks that you have what it takes to go on to higher education, and that you’re eligible to apply for the Year 12 Residential Summer School.
The Summer School is available to Year 12 (or equivalent) students from selected schools and colleges in the South West of England, who may be wondering about whether to apply to university, or aren’t clear what higher education involves, or might be thinking that it’s not an option for them.
The Summer School is a fun, interactive event designed to give students a taste of university life by providing the opportunity to spend five days and four nights living on a university campus as a student. It will enable you to experience university style teaching and social life in order to help you make an informed decision about your future in education.
The Summer School is totally free and includes all travel, accommodation, food/drink and social activities.
When and where will the Summer School be held?
The Summer School will take place between Monday 21 and Friday 25 June 2010 (a total of five days and four nights). It will be based on the Frenchay Campus of the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol, giving you the opportunity to experience many of UWE’s amenities such as teaching facilities, cafés, shops, sports centre and student accommodation.
What will I get out of the Summer School?
By participating in the Summer School you get free and fully inclusive time away, with the chance to meet lots of new people, try out different activities and discover whether university is for you. Getting a taste of university could open up all kinds of ideas on what you could do in the future. What’s more, you’ll have fun in the process!

What will I do at the Summer School?
The Summer School will begin with fun, informal
activities and ice breakers giving you the opportunity
to meet the other Year 12 students taking part, and
the Student Ambassadors and UWE staff team who
will be sharing the week with you.
You will take part in subject taster sessions where you’ll experience university teaching
and develop valuable skills such as team-work, problem solving and communication
skills. There will be a range of subjects to choose from such as Art, Media and Design,
Law, Humanities, Social Sciences, Education and the Sciences to name a few. The
sessions are designed to be hands on and informative, and to give you a good idea of
what university course content is like.
You will get to stay in one of UWE’s student flats to get a real taste of living on campus, and you’ll take part in fun social events. In the past, activities such as outdoor pursuits, barbeques, karaoke and many more have been enjoyed.
You will receive up-to-date information from university staff and existing students. Previous Summer Schools have included advice and guidance on student finance, careers, personal statements and study skills.
You will meet lots of new people considering their future in higher education and you will have lots of fun!!

How will I get to the Summer School?
Students travel by coach, train or mini-bus, with all transport costs paid for by UWE. All travel arrangements are organised by UWE. Further details of the travel arrangements will be provided once you’ve been offered and accepted a place.
Who will be there with me?
There will be about 50 other students on the Summer School from lots of different schools and colleges in the South West. Student Ambassadors who are current UWE students will spend the week with you, helping you to have a great time and being on hand if you have any problems. There will also be a team of UWE staff supporting you throughout the week.
Will I have to share a room?
No. You’ll be given your own en-suite room
in the student village on Frenchay Campus.
Each flat has six en-suite bedrooms plus a
shared kitchen and living space. You’ll share
the flat with five other Year 12 students (of
the same gender) from different schools or
colleges, and a Student Ambassador (also of the
same gender).
