Applicant Eligibility for Year 11 UniTasters

Download the 2009 UniTaster ProspectusThe Summer Schools are primarily aimed at:

Applicants must be in Year 11 for most regional summer schools.

Their teachers will believe they have the potential to progress to HE.

Aimhigher is all about giving young people who might not normally see themselves as going to uni the chance to discover more about what higher education (HE) is all about and what it can offer them.

Students from particular schools in the South West of England who might be thinking that HE is not really an option for them.

Students will need to live in South West England. This means Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath and NE Somerset, Swindon, North Somerset, Somerset, Wiltshire, Bournemouth, Poole, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.

Students might be unclear about what HE involves and want to find out more to see if it would be for them.

Under the new HEFCE targeting guidance, from 2008 our summer schools will increasingly be targeting young people from lower socio-economic groups (NS-SEC 4-8). The regional summer schools teacher's leaflet provides some guidance on occupations which come under these categories.

The HEFCE guidance also focuses on young people from disadvantaged backgrounds / deprived areas.

They might live in a part of the South West where few young people go on to HE.

It's quite possible that neither parent will have a higher education qualification.

We are very keen to encourage applications from students who may have a disability or a special educational need, for example dyslexic learners. Universities and higher education colleges are geared up to provide disability support. There are lots of examples of young people doing really well in HE who do have a disability or a particular learning need or difference.

We are also keen to get applications from students who are Looked After (either in care or fostered, for example).

We also work with the University of the West of England in Bristol and the University of Bath to offer Year 12 Summer Schools to school and Further Education (FE) college students (Bath is just for FE students).

University of PlymouthThe University Experience is an opportunity to meet up with other students from the Southwest and find out more about life at university. You will live like real uni students – in halls of residence where you will have your own room and share a kitchen with others at the university.  In the daytime you will be involved in a range of activities from academic workshops to recreational fun. It will be of benefit to you if you are thinking about going to university as one of your options and if you enjoy meeting people and experiencing something new. You will have plenty of opportunity to talk to current students and ask any questions you may have with regard to studying in higher education. The cost to you is nothing in terms of money (we pay for everything including travel) but we do ask you to bring enthusiasm!
