Workshops
A major part of the programme are the workshops. There will be a quite a number taking place and we will ask you to choose which workshops you would like to take part in. Workshops may include some or all of the following.
Occupational therapy - Everyday skills for independent living
This workshop will take place in the University’s new state of the art Occupational Therapy suite. You will work in small groups to develop your understanding and knowledge of occupational therapy through taking in part in practical activities and hearing from professionals working in this broad field. Paramedics
Paramedics are skilled professionals working in a highly physical and mentally demanding role. The recognition of the need to treat patients as quickly as possible following serious injury or medical emergency is widely accepted. The distinctive blue lights and sirens of an ambulance as it speeds on its way to an emergency are perhaps the most familiar image of the Paramedic for many people. Yet the public perception may be inaccurate. With only around ten per cent of 999 calls involving a life threatening situation, the role requires compassion, understanding and the ability to provide empathetic care, for example, by simply holding someone's hand at a very difficult time in their lives. In this introduction session, you will explore what it is to be a paramedic and get an insight into what goes on in the career path of this profession including practical work.
Physiotherapy - The Road to Recovery
This workshop will offer a short introduction to the areas physiotherapists work in, followed by some practical ‘tasks’. Through taking part in this workshop, you will develop an understanding of the breadth of areas in which physiotherapists work and have undertaken some practical activities related to physiotherapy practice.
Midwifery - The Role of Midwives
Working in groups you will take part in a series of tasks that will develop your understanding and help you formulate expectations about the role of midwives and midwifery in the health service. The final element of the workshop will be simulating the delivery of a baby using specialist equipment.
Nursing - Developing your Clinical Skills
You will be working in our specialist clinical skills lab to develop an insight into the practical aspects of care that are undertaken by Adult Nursing students in training by allowing them some hands on practical experience in a safe controlled environment.
Mental Health and Learning Disability Nursing - Pop music, celebrities and health
Test your knowledge of mental heath, learning difficulties and music! You will have to pit your wits against each other in this interactive quiz designed to get your brain muscles working.
Health Science - Discover Science in the National Health Service
This session will involve an excursion to the Bristol Royal Infirmary, where you will hear a lecture about health care science, take part in some interactive sessions and get the chance to take part in a tour of three of the pathology laboratories (Haematology, Biochemistry and Histology).
Child Nursing – Myths and Realities
You will learn more about the skills required for Children’s Nursing through hands-on tasks and interactive discussions with professionals from the field.
Biomedical Science - The engine room of modern medicine
You will be working in of the University’s high tech laborotries focusing on Microbiology - you will undertake practical work – receiving samples, preparation and sterilisation of media, microscopic examination of stained films and interpreting results for the patient.
Radiography - Advanced technology and care
You will be exploring what x-rays are, what happens when they pass through someone's body and why they are dangerous. Using our state of the art technology in our Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy Skills Laboratory, you will take part in a practical session in the x-ray room - utilise imaging equipment and digital viewing / manipulation facilities to provide an interactive overview of the main attributes of working within a modern radiography department.
Social Work - Work with people – it’s that simple and that complicated
You will be able to hear about some of the complex cases they deal with on a daily basis, and how they can make small changes, in sometimes very desperate lives. Social work professionals will tell you a bit about social work and the training, and you can ask them questions.
